History of East Las Vegas

Much of the east valley is unincorporated Clark County. Whitney began in 1931, when Stowell E. Whitney, a dairy farmer from Bunkerville, subdivided his ranch as the Boulder Highway was being built. The area went by East Las Vegas from 1958 until 1993, when the Whitney name came back.
The military shaped the northeast side. Las Vegas Army Airfield started flight training in December 1941 and trained B-17 gunners through World War II. It became Nellis Air Force Base in 1950, named for William Harrell Nellis, a pilot killed over Europe in 1944. The Thunderbirds have been based there since 1956, and the Red Flag combat training exercise is run from the base.
Sunrise Manor, at the western foot of Frenchman Mountain, was created by the county in May 1957. North Las Vegas had been planning to annex the area, and the county formed the town instead. In 1980 the neighboring Vegas Creek area was folded in, giving it roughly its current borders. Its population grew from about 10,900 in 1970 to more than 205,000 in 2020.
