History of Downtown & Central

Las Vegas began as a railroad town. On May 15, 1905, the San Pedro, Los Angeles & Salt Lake Railroad auctioned lots in Clark's Las Vegas Townsite, near its depot at the head of Fremont Street. The Plaza Hotel stands on the depot site today. The town became an incorporated city in 1911.
Neighborhoods spread out from the townsite. The Scotch 80s, west of the tracks, carries the name of a farm venture that Peter Buol, the city's first mayor, planned with Scottish money before World War I. Huntridge, built from 1941 to 1944 on land once owned by Leigh Hunt, was the city's first tract subdivision, and the Huntridge Theater opened there in 1944. John S. Park became the city's first historic district in 2003. Beverly Green, laid out in 1951, joined the city's historic register in 2016.
To the east, Irwin Molasky and Merv Adelson broke ground on Paradise Palms in 1960, with about 400 midcentury homes designed by Palmer & Krisel. Downtown, the Arts District took shape around Charleston Boulevard and Main Street starting in 1998, and First Friday began there in 2002.
